Pasture Assessment

Soil Testing

To assist the pasture soils to achieve the highest potential production, it is necessary to understand the balance and quantities of soil nutrients that will be supplied the forage plants. It is very important to measure the proper pH balance to maximize the availability of soil nutrients and micro-nutrients. Healthy, growing, green pastures need the proper balance of N-P-K* which can only be determined through scientific testing.

Once the result of soil testing is complete, the recommended levels of soil nutrients can be properly applied to the soil, at the appropriate times of the year.
 * N-P-K = Nitrogen - Phosphorous – Potassium

Forage Analysis

The analysis of the pasture plants can be accomplished through two methods.

A. Visual observation of the types and variety of plant species located in the pastures, including plant density and ratio of forage plants to weeds and noxious plants.

B. Actual plant forage analysis of the plant species can be estimated. After a plant species analysis is complete, the proper rates of seed application, herbicides, and plant seed species can be determined.

Budget and Strategy

An estimated budget can be prepared, and the implementation of the pasture
improvement can be initiated with a strategy to improve the overall pasture, grazing area.
