Pasture Renovation

No-Till Seeding

Probably the most efficient method to effectively place forage seed in the ground to
properly germination and development is through the use of a no-till drill. The technique has
been used for many years, as a means of not disrupting the established soil surface to permit
erosion by wind and water. The no-till drill has a minimum impact on the areas it is used to
establish a new seeding or to integrate new plant species seed into an established pasture
 as a part of revitalization.

As its name implies, the drill cuts a very narrow opening in the soil to permit the seed to
be dropped directly into the soil at a predetermined depth. Ultimately, the no-till seeding
technique can be used on pastures that are currently being grazed, although once the
seeding has been completed, resting the pasture is essential to permit the germination
and natural established from the fresh seeding.

The no-till drilling maybe accomplished by going one direction of the field or increasing
the density of the seeding by drilling in the opposite direction to provide a thorough
coverage of the field. Usually, for renovation, one direction is sufficient, whereas
some farm managers prefer to drill in two directions for new seeding.
